Panic at Breitbart that the American Way is being threatened by the sinister left:
North Carolina Students Told to Stop Singing National Anthem at 9/11 Memorial
According to a WLOS report, a North Carolina community is upset after being told to stop singing the National Anthem while on a visit to New York City.
Waynesville Middle School’s chorus was singing the anthem outside of the 9/11 Memorial while on a trip to New York when security asked them to stop midway through their performance.
WLOS reports the 9/11 Memorial requires groups to obtain a permit if they want to perform. Although the students did not have a permit, they were given verbal permission from a security guard.
How un-American! How anti-freedom! How communist! Something, something!
But seriously. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum requires a permit for performances and the adults who brought the children failed to get one, so naturally they were asked to stop their performance because A) they failed to follow the pre-established procedure, and B) were causing a disturbance in what many consider a solemn place. As it turns out, a verbal agreement with an employee who doesn’t have the authority to authorize such a performance isn’t enough.
Honestly, the whole thing isn’t a big deal. Yeah, I think they should have let the kids finish (assuming they were just singing the verse everyone knows—if they were singing the whole thing, forget it), but I’m also not spewing fire from my ears in rage about it, either.
With that said, I’m sure that the commenters at Breitbart reacted with level-headedness:
In no way are these overreactions! It’s a shame history doesn’t often set up experiments for us to witness; I’m sure I know how these same people would react if an imam sang the ezan next to the 9/11 memorial.
No one bothers to mention that the National September 11 Memorial and Museum is owned and operated by World Trade Center Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, so this isn’t the same as going to a public park; much as anyone might not like it, this isn’t property on which anyone can do just about anything they please. And since that’s the case, they’ve developed their own set of rules and regulations by which they expect all attendees to adhere to. One of those is that people who want to conduct musical performances have to first submit an application for a permit. After all, these right-wing Breitbartians recognize property rights, don’t they?
