NC Governor Pat McCrory has continued to support the controversial HB2, otherwise known as the bathroom bill. Ted Cruz in particular has had a hard time letting it go:
Cruz spoke with Beck about “repulsive perverts” who could molest little girls, and also mentioned that “You’ve got the Obama education department suing to try to force junior highs to let teenage boys shower with teenage girls.” Now where I have I heard that one before? Oh yeah:
In comments flagged by BuzzFeed on Tuesday and posted by the conspiracy website WND over the weekend, Huckabee shared his views on the growing social acceptance of transgender people.
“Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” Huckabee said earlier this year at the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
“I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.'”
Remember that this is the same Mike Huckabee who defended Josh Duggar, the eldest son of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar of 19 an Counting reality TV fame. It was revealed that Duggar had molested five girls, four of whom were his own sisters, when he was fourteen and fifteen years old. Huckabee had this to say about Duggar:
Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things. The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand—that being a minor means that one’s judgement is not mature. No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility.
See? He confessed his sins—you know, after the media revealed it and made him out to be the exact kind of thing Huckabee is railing against. I guess what Huckabee is trying to say is that it’s okay after all if high school boys shower with the girls—they just need to confess those sins later and they’ll be square. (Unsurprisingly, Huckabee places more blame on the “bloodthirsty” media for the controversy than Duggar himself, but that’s typical when you think there’s a liberal media out to destroy honest Christians nationwide!)
But you know what? That’s not a fair example, is it? I mean, Duggar was pretty young. It’s not like Republicans would rally around a grown man who had molested children.
Oops:
More than 40 letters in support of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert — including one from his former congressional colleague Tom DeLay — were made public Friday evening in advance of his sentencing next week on hush money charges.
That hush money is in connection with the pretty damning accusations that Hastert molested several young boys decades ago when he was a wrestling coach:
Federal prosecutors on Friday for the first time provided details of sexual abuse allegations against J. Dennis Hastert, the former speaker of the House, asserting that he molested at least four boys, as young as 14, when he worked as a high school wrestling coach decades ago.
Mr. Hastert, 74, is not charged with abuse because of statutes of limitation, prosecutors said, but he was accused last year of illegally structuring bank withdrawals to pay one of his victims in an effort to hide the abuse.
The letters of support that Hastert received mostly went like this:
“We all have our flaws, but Dennis Hastert has very few,” wrote DeLay, the Texas Republican who served as majority leader under Hastert in the early 2000s. “He doesn’t deserve what he is going through. I ask that you consider the man that is before you and give him leniency where you can.”
Hastert should be treated leniently because he has few flaws—it’s a really, really big one, but hey, it’s like Huckabee says: good people make mistakes!
So no, Republicans don’t actually care about protecting children from perverts. In typical fashion they’re terrified of having to accept trans people when they’re still not ready to accept gays. Who knows what could happen if we let trans people use facilities that correspond with their gender identity? How do we know perverts won’t run amok? I mean, just think about what guys like Larry Craig might do!
